Description: Each year, 24,000 Americans are killed due to alcohol-related
traffic accidents, and 600,000 more are seriously injured. Statistics
from the National Safety Council show that only one in every 2,000 drinking
drivers are stopped by police. The designated driver program is a practical
solution to the increasing problem of drinking and driving. Through dramatization,
narration and interviews, this informative video highlights one California
peace officer's efforts to implement a designated driver program. In a
joint effort with local agencies, he persuaded restaurant and bar owners
to try the program, which now serves as a model for other communities
in the U.S. and abroad. The concept is simple. One person in a party is
appointed the driver of the group and therefore refrains from drinking
any alcoholic beverages. To encourage people to participate, many establishments
offer free food and non-alcoholic drinks to the designated driver. It's
a good business practice for establishments selling alcohol, and it allows
consumers to set good examples for others. The factors that contribute
to drinking and driving and the designated driver program's solutions
are also explained. Video includes Teacher's Guide.
